I have to admit that my network does consist of pro grade kit and
therefore a lot of the techniques I use aren't going to be available to
others. For example the DHCP server does not run on the router it's on
my "Domain Controller" - that's in inverted commas because its a Samba
Domain Controller not a windoze one. 

My LMS runs on a QNAP which does have a manually configured IP (could be
reserved) but all the SB players are DHCP.

I have never had to use a manually configured static IP on any of my SB
players - I haven't got a Duet or Transporter but do have at least one
of all others and have never come across any issue with the DHCP client
- what is the problem with it?
