I didn't mention any names on purpose. I don't want to
fall into the accusing trap either? I agree with most of what you said.
The only part that I have have tried to explain is that
the Commander was all alone and had already taken the whole calss to the
restroom. To stop whatever he was inthe middle of and take them all again -since
he can't just leave the group, would be redundent.
Some boys will also say they have to go when they really
don't. They want to cut class or even get attention.
We need to be careful of remarks such as "I can think of
no excuse for this" when I already gave you the excuse. It is belittling and
says that the commander was an idiot.

Now that you have had an opportunity to re-read what I highlighted, tell
me, of what have I accused you?

I hear a lot of accusations of Commanders- Satan is
our accuser. Our brothers should not be. Lets remember that. I have
heard 3 commanders who have confessed that this happened and so far eveyone
has just jumped on them and said some awful things about their charachter.
WOW Where is Christ when we confess our faults to one
another only to be pounced on like Satan does?

If there is one thing that we as commanders have a
responsibility to do, it is to preserve the dignity of the boys. I
learned this as a boy, and have seen it reinforced throughout my lifetime.
Satan uses bad experiences like the one that Bob Simon related to scar a
boy for life. One of the worst things a RR leader could do is to be
responsible for such an experience. I'm pretty well known for seeing
things in "black and white", and being just about as narrow-minded as they
come, but I can think of no excuse for this.
Alot of things have come to light through this discussion. Not all of
them things to be proud about. I'm just as guilty as anyone, I reckon.
Ken, I would recommend that you delete that "Parade of Discipline" or
whatever it was- before you use this thing. It won't fly this side of the
ocean, and I pray your better than that.

Victor - discipline code is very nicely done.
Though we have a formal Code of Conduct, we have never had a formal
code for discipline. we have had an informal discipline code,
but we have never codified it and printed it. If it is OK with
you and/or the others, I would like to copy and use it. I would
also like to publish it as part of our parent information
packet.
Once on a bus trip, I had a Buckaroo ask me to stop the
bus so he could go to the bathroom. We had just told everyone
to go before loading up, so I told him to wait until we got
home. Much to my shame and mortification, he couldn't hold it
until we got home. From that point on, I have been a LOT more
flexible with bathroom trips. Regardless of when they were last
told to go. Regardless of the inconvenience to the rest of
us. Inconvenience is nothing compared to the potential damage
to the child. During meeting times, if I have doubts about the
situation, I send a guide or the senior guide with the
boy.
