Wash and iron uniform first. This is a must. Iron in military creases
before putting on patches. Iron them in the front, the three in the back,
and down the arms. Start out lightly down the arms. Put in lightly and put
uniform on and see if the crease is going to run down your arm in the right
place. 90% if the time, it does. This makes it easier to keep them there
and touch them up after washing in the future. The patches that you will
never take off, RR emblem, Royal Ranger name tab, (although this is the
easiest to sew on), can all be ironed on. This will be permanet, but who
cares, they will always be there. Take your Missouri name tab and your
Sectional staff patch, line them up properly, and zig zag them together.
This will keep your uniform from showing through as you move your arm. If
you have your creases ironed down the sleves, put the uniform on and check
to be sure the crease in the arms indeed is in the correct place. Take the
RR emblem and place in on the crease in the left arm. The center line of
the star should align up with the crease, 1\2 inch down from seam. After
getting this spaced correctly, steam on. Do not have the iron turned all
the way up or you will scortch the emblem and your uniform. Trust me on
this one, I have experience and I learned the hard way. On the right arm,
find the center of your district name patch, in your case Missouri, the
center of the sectional staff is the little star, and align these up on the
crease in that sleve, 1/2 inch from the seam. You can either sew these on,
glue them on (use only elmers school glue because this will wash out on
first washing) and then sew, or steam them on. If you think you will have
the shirt for a number of years, steam them on. I usually just get them
started on the outside and let them settle for a minute to take hold and
turn the sleves inside out and hit it good with the steam, this holds them
on forever. No loose threads this way either. I sew on my own patches, not
my wife. The event and training patches I either sew on if I think there is
a chance that they will ever be changed or steam them on also.
Another tip, I always wash my uniforms myself. Wash only, hang to dry and
then go over with the iron including the military creases. I never put it
in the dryer. Two reasons why I do this.
#1 I have seen dry cleaners that do not put the creases in correctly and
they are HARD to get out.
#2 If you have put on a patch that you later may want to take off, the
cleaners have just steamed it on for you.
Myself, I steam them all on because I figure I can afford the price of a new
shirt once a year or so. Sorry this is so long but I hope it helps. If
there was or is a easier or better way, I haven't found it. I have known
people who have tried the glue route and there is nothing more terrible than
a district or sectional official at an event and his patch is half off
because he glued it on. Something to think about. May God Bless you in
your new office.
