Dear Green Hornet, A point system is the best toolthat we have ever utilized
in Outpost 171 N.Tx. district. This a healthy and friendly competitive
environment that inspired 100% of 40 boys to consistently show up at weekly
outpost meetings wearing full khaki uniforms with bible, handbook, and
workbook in hand. Each quarter we held a council of achievement at which we
offered 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes for the boys who had accumulated the
greatest amount of points.
We also used the point system as a discipline tool by offering points
for not doing anything inconsistent with the ranger code. By doing this, we
were able to maintain a considerably high level of order without having to
use any type of negative reinforcement, which I like to discourage. Showing
up early to help boys work on advancements has always been met with an
enthusiastic response from the boys in our outpost, also.(The
go-getters,that is.) I am learning that training is the #1 key to unlocking
the untapped potential that rests within the life of every boy. If we are
willing to spend the time and effort (and prayer) then we will see that boys
are more than eager to learn all they can about the world around them. God
