Allen, I think you've hit the nail on the head. Discontent, despair,
and discouragement are all enemies that we must battle in the Spirit(2nd
Chr. chap. 20) before we can effectively minister to the hearts of boys. I
also believe that the success of any effective point system can be
accredited to God alone. I don't know nor can I explain how these things
work, I just thank God that he blesses our efforts.
As for the point system that we utilized, we offered points as follows:
1. Wearing "class 'c' uniform"=1point.
2. Wearing full khaki uniform=2points.
3. Bring bible=1point.
4. Bring Handbook-workbook=1point.
5. Bring a friend for the first time=2points.
6. Follow the ranger code throughout the meeting=1point.(This is the
one that really surprised me- I was dumbfounded to see how hard even the
most difficult boys tried to hold to this one point!)
7. Having an item to be checked off on advancements=1point.
The first five items were considered basic requirements, the rest were
"bonus" points, for a possible five points basic points per meeting.
We expected boys to accumulate at least 60% of the basic possible points to
be eligible to attend an outside activity (i.e.-paintball, campout, etc.)
during a set period of time, usually 3 months.
Each quarter, we conducted a council of achievement at which 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd prizes were awarded for the greatest number of points accumulated.
These boys were also named ranger of the quarter and subsequently, ranger of
the year for our outpost, as the point system served as an accurate
evaluation for the same.
The boys were showered with praise for thier accomplishments and each
strived to attain the goal. It totally changed the outpost. I am sure that
others have implemented ideas that work equally well for them. The
Wintracker point system can be edited to fit the individual needs of an
outpost. For more info or to download the upgrade to the latest version,
