The degree of faith in a Boy Scout troop varies from troop to troop. Some Scout meetings are held in evangelical churches by born-again leaders. Other Scout leaders run the gamut from atheist to agnostic to non-Christian religions. The Mormons have certainly used Scouting to their advantage. In some Mormon communities, it is typical for teen-aged boys (and all their friends) to not be allowed to get a driver's license until he reaches the rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is equivalent to the Royal Rangers Gold Medal (It was actually more difficult to achieve until the Ranger program was revamped.) Like the U.S. Government, Scouting has its roots in Christianity and Judeo-Christian ethics. Also like the U.S. Government, the program is friendly to Christian leaders teaching boys salvation even if many of the leaders aren't. -D Perich

The Boy Scouts were just denied the Federal money to assist in their Jamboree because separation of Church and State issues were cited. Fort A.P. Hill is still allowed to be the place of the Jamboree, but the military will not assist in Federal dollars anymore in making it happen.
