James,

I seem to have the same or, at least, a very similar problem to you. In my
case it started with the previous beta release (RC3).

I reported to RBTI at the time that the update simply didn't work and the
RBG7.EXE file size seemed to have changed significantly but got no
worthwhile response. Consequently I ignored that update and re-installed the
previous one because I don't have time to waste investigating these
irregularities any more.

I downloaded the release version first of all using Download Accelerator
Plus - always a pain because I have to correct the URL every time but it
saves endless re-tries if/when my Internet connection fails. I got much the
same effects with that as with RC3.

I then downloaded it again after having uninstalled DAP with the same
results - not surprisingly because the download file size was unchanged
(4,612,041 bytes).

In both those cases the unpack/install procedure "paused" - read hung - with
the RBG7.EXE file current progress on 95% and the overall progress on 71%.
After some minutes, five - maybe more, the process completed suddenly.

Following Razzak's response to you I attempted a third download without DAP
and having stopped every other process on my PC that I could - no virus
scan, etc. I also waited five minutes after the end of the download to
ensure no modem activity before closing everything "properly" and re-booted
before attempting to install the new files. This _was_ different and did
_not_ "hang" at all. The downloaded file size, however, was exactly the same
as both previous attempts.

Nevertheless, the problem was not solved. Like you, I get a sluggish - to
say the least - response from my PC and the mouse hibernates. It is,
effectively, unusable even before trying to run R:Base. Right-clicking on
the RBG7.EXE file, for example, and trying to display the properties takes
an age.

Re-installing RC2 solves the problems so I have gone back to that - again.

Now, if my memory serves me correctly, I seem to remember a similar problem
with, I think, v6.5++. I have looked back through the list postings that I
have from July 2000 onwards but no subject strikes me as relevant.

As there is no indication that the file size of RBG7.EXE is now expected to
be different from previous releases I can only assume that, as it is
extracting to about a fifth of the previous size, it is not extracting
correctly. Even so, I get the impression that the problem is caused by some
conflict with other software or the replacement of a common file.

Regards,
Alastair.
