No, it's wrong because a file with no extension that has a MacType of whatever the XML standard MacType is, won't be able to be opened by your program.

MacType is a valid metadata information that should always be used, in addition to extensions. By supporting it, you're not limiting your ability to open .xml files, but enhancing your ability to work on the Mac when a user deletes the extension. Sure, they may not do it often or at all, but is it really that hard to type in the MacType desired so that it *does* work if it ever happens?
