It's not about being professional or knowing what to do for 10 or 20
years.

As we age, our bodies change.

Doing the same thing to warm-up every day can be harmful to a 32 year
old and still good for a 25 year old.

Conditioning coaches have to be as much psychologists as physical
educators and physical therapists. The egos of major leaguers sometimes
prevents good communication and buy-in from the players.

I did the same workout at 40 that I did at 25. I was in the best shape
of my life. Sub 9% body fat almost dangerously low. Strength was very
high. Then .... Ruptured disc and four more herniated discs. My
workout changed 100% after PT. All core now. No upper body. Wakefield
would not be able to pitch at all today if he did not change his workout
to accommodate his similar back issues.

As Youk and others approach 30, they'll begin to feel tweaks in their
groins and hamstrings that they never felt earlier. They'll need to
adapt their workouts. As they get over 30, they'll have Achilles and
calf problems. If they are doing steroids, then they'll have bicep,
pectoral, and lat issues if they don't adapt their stretching and
warm-ups.

You give them way too much credit as major leaguers. They're sometimes
dumb, obstinate guys who fake the stretching because they don't envision
something happening to them...until it does.

I agree on the conditioning coach. These guys are professionals. They
know what to do.

I think these athletes have figured out how to keep their bodies going
at this level. They've been playing every day for 10-20 years. They
know what to do about stretching.

I just think we've hit a string of bad luck. Bad luck and Adrien
Beltre.
