I think that would work, now that you mention it. It is about 4 inches off
the water now, so I could add a 6" strip to the bottom to elevate it. It is
a heavy ass hood, and is poorly designed, but it is useable if I add to it.
I will definitely need to add some ventilation holes, because right now, it
is limited in its ventilation. It has an icecap fan in it now and that's it.
I will probably use the two icecap fans I have in the hood on my 70 and add
those to the 170. That will leave 2 big holes in the hood of the 70 for the
heat of the VHOS to escape from. I will also have some decent space under
the 170 for a large sump, which means I can add a couple of clip fans under
there.

Do you think that will be sufficient to keep it cool? It will be the 170
gallon tank, the 70 gallon tank plus about 40 gallons worth of sump. I
figure total water volume of about 200 gallons. Heat sources will be the
Iwaki 100 RLT, a mag 2400, a mag 1200 and about 1700 watts of light for both
tanks. My goal is not to have to have my chiller (which will be totally
undersized on that system) come on at all.

Thoughts??

Thanks again,
Shane

Hi, Shane. My digital needs batteries so I can't send you a picture.
I use
these shelves over prop. tanks so I don't have to fart around with a
hood. It
sounds like you can modify the existing hood to accept MH and not
worry about
the shelf idea. You can put a 1X4" strip on the bottom lip of the
existing
hood and stain/paint it to match the rest of the hood. This will
elevate it
another 4" above the water and still hide the water line. You could
elevate
it more depending on how high you want it. You could even cut some
ventilation holes in it if needed. HTH
