She thinks it will look bad. Personally, I am into making the inhabitants of
the tanks the center of attention. The stand and surrounding objects are
secondary (I am not saying I wouldn't want the stand and such to look good,
but they are barely noticed when people notice the tank). The stands are not
exactly the same, and she thinks having 2 tanks in the room like that is
going to look funky. Both stands are black, but the 170 is a shiny oak
finish and my current set up is a flat black particle board set up. I can
repaint it to a shiny coat, which may help, but I don't think she thinks the
two tanks together like that will look good. I think it would be pretty wild
looking. I picture a nice 6 foot reef tank with a bunch of SPS and fish and
then kitty-corner the cubical 70 with a big fat carpet anemone in it with
some clownfish doing their thing.
She didn't argue about the 170, which actually threw me because she already
hates the 70, but then when I tried to mix both tanks in their, she wasn't
going for it... I hope I can make it work, but may have to just be happy
with the 170 (I say that like a 170 is a bad thing!)....

Well Shane, I would say find out what it is that is concerning the
wife
about it. The room it will take up, the noise, money, then see
what you
can do to alleviate her concerns. ( had to just do this with my
wife to get
my 220 setup. ) She was worried it was going to be a eyesore but
once I
showed her that it would actually look very nice she was all for it.

Okay everyone.... Heres the real question. Ran the two tank idea by
the wife
today. She was not going for it. She was not so against the big
tank, but
was not going for the two tank set up. So... the real question is,
how do I
convince her that the two tank set up would be cool??? That is the
real
question...
Fifty bucks to however can give me the sure fire way!! :-)

Hi, Shane. Hoping to encourage you to do the deal. 170
gallons is a
lot of
tank, especially connected to your 70 gallon. Seems like a
very
interesting
set-up. If the 170 is rectangular, you can simply build a
shelf over
it and
mount the lights on the underside of the shelf. You can
place light
things
for storage on top and put a nice looking trim around it for
a more
professional look. You can do this by buying premachined
boards at
Home Depot
and mounting them on some inexpensive shelf brackets. The
whole
project can
be done really well for under $100. You would need a good
return
pump and for
a system that size an Iwaki WMD40XRLT would work very well.
These
are
available online for around $160 plus shipping and will
literally
run
forever. You can, of course, hard plum the entire system
easily with
sched.
40 PVC. I have about 500 gallons of systems on the second
floor of
our house.
The weight is not a problem as long as we don't add
waterbeds! You
should try
to put your tanks perpendicular to floor joists. Electrical
supply
is more of
a concern. You can very easily polish out the majority of
defects in
the
plexi by yourself for much less than $200. Go for it! HTH.
