that method works well for me Chris. I use two heaters and when it goes down
to -40C this winter I may add a third. I keep my tank in my basement and it
can get cool down there.

I like the idea of the titanium heater but instead of an expensive
controller consider this. Try using two small heaters instead of one large
one. That way if the thermostat on one sticks it will be unable, on its own,
to severely overheat the system. This works in two ways, because if one
heater fails the other would keep the temp. from dropping rapidly.

Sorry about your loss. I know how horrible it can be.

I hate glass thermometers! You always have to worry about breaking them! I
have one of these titanium heaters in my 125 gallon tank in the sump. There
are several sizes from 50 to 350 watts. It has a very nice temp controller,
but I just set it to 80 max and use my Aquacontroller to actually turn it on
and off. It's doubtful that both my Aquacontroller and the heater's temp
control would both fail at the same time. This gives it some redundancy.
