Unless of course there's a Channel 12 or 13 transmitter nearby. ;-) They can be problematic, even though they're outside the band.... above and below. Mixes from high powered 12 and 13 transmitters and other transmitters nearby can be all sorts of, um... "fun". But generally I'd agree with you. 220's a wonderful repeater band. The lower noise floor in general means that you have to do less work to pull in the weak stations and give the repeater a great receiver. Antennas are big, but not as big as VHF. The downside is that duplexers and user radios are generally more expensive and harder to come by in the used marketplace. I wish I could finish my personal 220 project but finances changed a couple of years ago and I turned my pair back in to the coordinator here this year as "not on air and won't be". At least for now. My original plans of duplexing a couple of 220 Tait mobiles was both silly (mobiles suck for repeaters) and died when I blew up one of them. (Heh... oops. Definitely my fault, never do probe work on the living room coffee table, keep that job on the real workbench, dummy.... bzzzzzzzzzt!) Still working on some 220 conversions to Mastr II's though -- gotta replace some old club gear that is starting to show its age. That and it's a great learning process, which makes it double-fun... now if I were just better at it and faster. Some of us "computer guys" are slow with our soldering irons, eh. That and too many irons in the fire with other projects and stuff, as always... And something new (buzzing, nasty, regular interference) is just hammering our 224.98 machine out here right now... starting to look like that one's going to be an all-out hunt... it's outside the repeater building, coming in off the antenna... oooh boy, here we go... time to go see if it's on frequency or only there when other TX's are on at the site... wheeeeee.
