re: 1, you gain 50ms (out of 150ms) on every invocation of the library.
Might not be much, but there *is* a difference.
re: 2, why is it better? You haven't yet described a single case where it
is better. It shouldn't matter for anyone, except someone who's trying to
create a different layout for the Spark distribution, and I don't see any
compelling argument for supporting that use case.
