Mike, This is an interesting problem which has become more of an issue as the years have gone on. I agree with you... most of the time, I am more interested in the Original Release Date.
ID3 v2.3 has the frame 'TYER' used for the release year (They also have 'TDAT' used for month and date). ID3 v2.4, which is still lagging in usage (not by Slim Devices, they have embraced it substantially) essentially split this into three dates. 'TYER' has become 'TDRC' (even though it was supposed to be 'TDRL') and is in use by SlimServer, as well. This, for the most part should be referring the the release date of the specific release (Remaster, etc.) TDOR is the v2.4 frame specifically defined to be the original release date. You may want to use a tagging tool which allows you to store both. Currently, however, SlimServer does not use this frame and does not have a mechanism to show two different dates. Perhaps in the future...
