I use the orgininal release year on remasters, tagging all tracks in the
album with the same year. Since I generally sort by artist/year/album,
this keeps reissues next to the original on a SlimServer web page.

Greatest hits can go any way you like. If the CD was issued in 2005, I
may use that year, but if it's a CD of recordings from 1950-55, I'll
probably use 1955, particularly if the artist had output in later
years.

More difficult are CDs containing more than one album - pretty common
with jazz album reissues where the original albums were each under 30
minutes. I'll sometimes split these into individual albums, but usualy
don't bother. At that point, it's "pick one" for determining the year.
I generally use the later date, or the date of the more recognizable
album, since these CDs often pair a fairly classic album with a more
obscure one.

Thankfully, I'm not so anal that I feel the compulsion to tag each
track with the exact recording/release year. I generally think of
recorded music in terms of albums, so as far as I'm concerned the date
is the date of the orginal album release.
