The way I handle it is to use the original release date in the YEAR tag
of each track.  With Greatest Hits albums, each track often has a
different date.  Sometimes researching a boxed set for the original
year of each track takes quite a while, especially if the information
isn't in the liner notes or booklet.  But once I have them properly
tagged, browsing or playing by YEAR gives me music that was originally
released in that year.

For remasters I put it in the ALBUM tag:

Can't Buy A Thrill [98 remaster]
Fragile [03 remaster+]

(for remasters with bonus tracks, I use the "+" designation).  I tend
to give bonus tracks the YEAR of the original release, because they are
usually alternate versions from that same session or tracks that didn't
make the final cut of the original release.
