I had a similar problem. Started with my music in ALAC but then moved to
FLAC as the support/community is better. Worked fine on the SB3 but I
had to get SS to convert to WAV (if I recall correctly) and then stream
that. Takes up a lot of bandwidth and I was getting dropouts and slow
remote response. The SB3 uses native FLAC so response seems better.

I originally had my iPod running ALAC files but even with a £500 set of
Shure 5c earphones it was not at all obvious that the sound was better
than a lossy format. Ditto with the iPod in the car (high end BMW 5
series). Basically there is too much extraneous noise to make lossless
worthwhile. So my current setup is FLAC for the SB3 into the hi-fi and
I used the FLAC2MP3 script to convert the lot for the iPod as MP3
files. I now have 11,000 FLAC songs on the ReadyNAS and the same amount
on a 60g iPod as MP3 (256k mostly).

When new music comes along I rip to FLAC for the SB3 and then convert
to MP3 using foobar2000/LAME and use iTunes to manage.
