I'd agree with you in principle. I can plug headphones in and they work fine, the mic input on my computer is the same as line-in.
As for the continous tone, it's a very clean beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep type thing, doesn't sound distorted but is at a high enough volume that if I increase the headphone volume I can gradually hear the talking over the top, though this quickly gives me a headache and become distorted. I've heard people say they learn quicker by listening to songs or languages to music, but i'm sure this tone doesn't cover it. As a test, I did try a normal audio CD and that records fine (using Audacity).
