Hi All,

First off - thanks for your patience... Hopefully this isn't a common
thread, but given the expertise of the folks on these boards, I'm won't
be surprised if it is...

This may be a bit off topic, but I'm hoping for some pointers. I have
somewhere in the neighbourhood of 1000 albums, and I'm looking to
digitize them for use with my squeezebox, with a minimum of pain and
discomfort.

I have a Creative Labs Audigy card (probably one of the first ones
made) in a box I've given over to Ubuntu as I was fed up with Windoze.
Pretty good audio card, but I never really took advantage of its
features. I have a few different turntables, a nd invested around $150
in a preamp (as turntables have different requirements than most other
inputs). The pc I use for ripping my CD audio is a pretty non-descript
machine. I put an LG DVD writer in it, but otherwise, its pretty
vanilla. Works fine for the CDs I've put in so far, provided they're
not completely hacked up...

Here's the thing... My goal is to get my audio onto hard disk in the
least painful fashion, but I don't want to sacrifice audio quality for
the sake of convenience. My CD library is around 400GB at present in
FLAC format, which is what I hope to use for my LP collection for the
sake of consistency.

So here's what I'm looking for:

- pointers to the simplest way to digitize LP audio, and still maintain
the highest quality recordings.
- software (free, if possible for converting / tagging LP recordings to
include them in my library.

I'm familiar with, and use MP3Tag, EAC, and dbPowerAmp on a regular
basis, so I suppose its possible that I already have the software I
require, however, my experience has been that converting LPs to
digitized audio is not as straightforward as you might expect...

FYI - I have this amazing Jimmy Hendrix album, called 'Soundtrack to
Rainbow Bridge' which I'm really keen to get converted... It has some
really amazing not commonly heard tracks, including a studio version
of the Spangled Banner (or is that the Star Scrambled Bammer... ;-)
that really blew my mind back in the 70's - or maybe that was the red
microdot acid... in any case, its certainly a keeper...

Pointers greatfully accepted, and criticism taken with a grain of salt.
:-) I'm open to any advice you're willing to provide.

Peace!
Brawny
P.S. I bought my SB3 last summer, and I've been lurking ever since. I
think the concept of the SP3, and the hardware implementation are both
excellent. Hi to Mark Lanctot who lives nearby, and who always has a
sensible word to add to any discussion (but whom I've never met in
person) and Steve Taylor, who put me on to the Squeezebox, and to whom
I am eternally grateful!
P.P.S. For those of you who've made it this far in my post, I have a
couple comments and words of advice. First, unlike me, don't post
after drinking, secondly, the 70's were what the 60's wanted to be.
Thirdly, don't take the brown acid ;-), and lastly, if you haven't had
a good laugh lately, you should watch Up in Smoke. Again.

Peace! (again!)
Brawny
(did I mention not to post after drinking.... ;-)
P.P.P.S Are there any Zappa fans out there? I've been stuck listening
to Heavy Duty Judy from "The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life" the
last couple of days, and the trombone parts have turned into some sort
of ear worm... Augh!!!! ;-)
