With most music in the last 25 years being digitally mastered, you would probably find that the encoding used on the digital master tape used to record the LP was probably incapable of recording frequencies that high anyway, particularly in the early days of digital. Oh for the days of AAA mastered vinyl LPs. In those days you could kid yourself you could actually hear those higher frequencies! A sampling rate of 44.1khz will give you two pieces of information for each "wave" of a 20khz signal. That is enough to encode, say, the peak and the trough of a sine wave, although it could, if badly timed, encode halfway up and halfway down - which would be no wave at all! I would say that 4 samples are probably the minimum needed to encode peak to trough of a wave with reasonable accuracy, so an 88khz sample rate gives you just enough for 20khz whereas 44khz is probably only enough to capture 10khz with any accuracy. As I said, I am not sure it will make any audible difference - but it is worth a try. There are lots of stages in the recording - encoding - replay path, each of which could add a little to the degredation of the musical signal, but I think the biggest contributor is probably the quality of the analogue output from the Receiver. I won't improve that unless I go for a standalone DAC or the Transporter.
