Yes, apart from the fact that I was listening to the music play as I recorded it, and heard no distortion, it was not at all the kind of distortion I would expect to hear from a cartridge mistracking or from over-cooking the input level on peaks. It was generally at a steady level regardless of how quiet or loud the passage was. It was a kind of hiss, but not an "analogue" hiss. It was spitty and electronic sounding - very nasty. Strangely it would gradually fade in and out. Some tracks were fine, others heavily over-laid with this sound. > Can I ask: how are you feeding the signal to the soundcard? The Linn nerd in me compels me to tell you that my turntable is LP12 (with Trampolinn and Cirkus updates), Lingo, Ekos and AT-OC9 cartridge - which tracks beautifully. The only input to the 72 is the turntable. There is a 5 pin SNAIC to the hi-cap. I actually took *your* very helpful advice from an earlier thread and took the output from the hi-cap that normally would go to the power amp and using a modified SNAIC with phono sockets into the M-Audio. This allows me to set the recording level using the pre-amp volume control. I usually play safe and rarely get anywhere near overloading the input. Spin-it-again is a basic, one task, LP recording program primarily designed to put LPs onto CD. It records the whole LP to a single WAV file with the sampling setup of your choice (eg 24bit/88.2kHz). It then has various clever tools to split the WAV into individual tracks each titled with appropriate meta-data taken from the usual on-line databases. These tracks can either be burnt straight to CD or saved as WAV or MP3 files (not FLAC unfortunately). With my 24/88.2 test run I never got as far as splitting into tracks as listening to the initial WAV file showed up the heavy distortion (I also used dbPoweramp converter to FLAC the main WAV file to check compression efficiency). However, I have just discovered that SIA *always* converts the main WAV file into 16/44.1 CD compatible WAV tracks, regardless of the initial recording settings. Apart from that it is a brilliantly simple program to use. The use of on-line CD metadata systems to title the tracks was a masterstroke. So it is a disappointment that it is so limited in its output options. It is getting a bit left behind by the movement away from CD as a listening medium and needs to increase its output options.
