Add compilation=1. If it is a compilation, it should not have an album artist.
By definition, having an album artist means the album is not by various
artists, which means it's not a compilation.

Some people prefer to set album artist=Various Artists. i.e. the album is then
not a compilation album, it's an album by a made-up artist Various Artists.
This would be different to SC's "Various Artist" that is displayed for
compilation albums (in that you can change the name in SC for representing
compilations). I think that's really naff - another frig.

Really? I thought you didn't like using non-standard tags in mp3 files. There
isn't a standard Compilation tag - you have to enter a custom tag Txxx
COMPILATION.

Some things are not sensible to store together. Album Artist is used to
prevent compilations, and Compilation=1 is used to represent various artist
albums. The two things are incompatible. It's like trying to store
Compilation=0 and Compilation=1 together on a single album - it doesn't work.

If there is one album artist for all songs on an album (in your case defined by
TPE2), it can't be a compilation. I mean, what would the point be of setting
an album artist, if you don't want it sorted/grouped by that artist, but to
appear as a compilation album (listed under Various Artists, or whatever you
have SC defined to list compilation albums as)?

In what way?

Yes, that's a scanner setting. The setting is only used by SC when scanning.
It defines a mapping from id3v2.3 TPE2 tag to a SqueezeCenter library
contributor role. Nothing more.

>and besides all that, it isn't necessary in these discussions to
>constantly make clear that SC is translating tags into fields in its db

No, it's not. It is not right to use the term TPE2 everywhere, because it's
not right. If I only had OGG Vorbis tags, it would certainly not sort by TPE2.
SC always sorts by Album Artist. End of story. The means of getting an album
artist is the extra detail, in which it can be sourced from many places.

>i need OTHER apps to work.
Okay. So do I.

>so i need TPE2 defined for all albums.
>
No, you don't. You only need an Album Artist or Compilation tag for albums
that have differing Artist tags, to disambiguate.
