Wow Phil, this is a deja vu thread.  We had this when I first started. 
You convinced me to add the album artist tag and I've never had any
problems.  I still feel that since all the major players have hijacked
the band tag to be album artist it's time to just give in and accept it
as the de facto way.  Itunes wins as usual. :(
