ok,

first, i filed a bug i haven't myself verified. so if anything in the
bug is erroneous, or if any data needs added / clarified, please do
so:

on to this:

what if i wanted SC to know something was a compilation?

the only way i can do that with album artist data being read in the
tag, is to set an explicit comp=1 tag.

i can't simply choose to disable 8001 b/c if i do, some things i DON'T
want the automatic (and goofy) VA logic to detect as comps will be.
and i don't want to have to add comp=0 tags just to over-ride that.

also, my library is used by used by more than just SC. TPE2 allows me
to consistently organize my music across almost any app, including now
SC thanks to 8001.

but that doesn't mean i wouldn't want to identify to SC some albums as
comps. i don't currently, but i might want to go to the effort one
day. and again, other apps also use that info.

i think it should read and store both equally. why should some data be
more important than other data?

the debate should be over what SC does with it once its in the DB, and
i would say that should be a user option.

so in other words, ALL tags are scanned in, and then the user says
treat tpe2 as album artist (or not) and ignore/don't ignore comp tags.

that way the user can decide, as it should be.

btw, my understanding was that comp=1 took precedence over ALBUMARTIST
even if that data was in the DB. the bug may then only apply to comp=0
i guess we'll find out when the bug gets addressed.

well, what if i want SC to know something i have with TPE2 data IS a
comp?

and the second part is a bug that needs fixed. i still question the
scope of it, and i would like someone to verify it beyond the one guy?
...in this thread.

not saying it isn't there, but i'd like to know what exactly we're
dealing with here.

its a given.

i didn't see the need to do this, but feel free.

you are incorect.

here is the text of the option, explicitly laid out in SC settings:

> "Treat TPE2 MP3 tag as Band
> Treat TPE2 MP3 tag as Album Artist"

and here is the text of the infobox:

> "The MP3 tag format does not provide a standard way of defining an Album

> (iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player) while others may use it for the

and besides all that, it isn't necessary in these discussions to
constantly make clear that SC is translating tags into fields in its db
library that it then actually uses to do what it does. its all a given.
yes, some poor newbie is going to be confused at first, but i don't
always feel the need to write my posts in such a way that they cater to
newbies. if one has a question, i assume they'll ask, and i'll happily
clarify it for them at that time.

jmo.

i need OTHER apps to work. so i need TPE2 defined for all albums.

i can't just leave TPE2 undefined, and another problem is that just ONE
TPE1 mismatch results in a compilation if TPE2 is undefined.

however, if i want SC to know something with TPE2 is a comp, i can't,
unless it reads and respects the comp=1 tag.

how else could i get SC to recognize a TPE2'd album as a comp? i
couldn't.

thats a really dopey bug, esp since comp=0 means it the files probably
NEED the TPE2 data.

Philip Meyer;355593 Wrote:

not true. i put "Various Artists" "Original Soundtrack" and other info
in TPE2, which as i've showed you, is what Gracenote does as well.

again, this is the defacto standard of mainstream apps, like it or
not.

so all my TPE2 data on "revenge of the nerds" is "Original Soundtrack"
but it is STILL a comp.

so i say again, SC should read ALL data, store ALL data, and allow the
user to determine how TPE2 should be employed, and if comp tags should
be enabled or not.

Philip Meyer;355593 Wrote:

not a viable solution if SC is to work with other apps.

thats cool for you, but that would not work for me. i use other apps
besides SC. mainstream ones.
