ok, so "yours" then. Philip Meyer;355874 Wrote: > I have no objection to having Album Artist="something" and > compilation=0; i do, its redundant and unnecessary. Philip Meyer;355874 Wrote: > I object more to having Album Artist="something" and compilation=1, in > that this is not reality. it is reality, its just you don't want to acknowledge it b/c it doesn't jive with what you consider to be correct. i already said you may be right in an academic sense, but in the pragmatic sense this is not the reality on the ground, the defacto standard out there. what more can i do when i demonstrate to you what gracenote does, and you simply refuse to acknowledge it??? It's also > bad for support. i think you and i agree philosophically as to the entire messy awfulness of the situation, if only it were a perfect world, but that doesn't change the reality of the marketplace. i simply want SC to work with mainstream apps with as little effort necessary from me (or others similar to me), and that means it needs to recognize that as far as mp3s are concerned, it needs an option to recognize TPE2 as album artist, b/c that is the defacto standard of mainstream apps in the marketplace, and that is now done thank the gods. but it also means that it should also allow such users to set a positive comp=1 tag for those CDs that need it, b/c users have NO OTHER METHOD for getting SC to recognize comps! its their only option, one i thought was already implemented and the existing case. So I set an album artist of "The > Pretenders" on each track. I think > we agree that is a bug. I would not want SC to report the album on the > screen as "Compilation: No" either. sure, we agree on all that basically, altho i have very little exp with itunes, so i don't know how or when it sets comp tags. but keep in mind, different apps rip in different ways, and also get their CD data from different sources, and i'd imagine even have some variety within themselves. i know EAC sometimes put guest artists in the song name, (yuk) as opposed to on the track name, and then doesn't call it VA. i mean there is so much variation here its impossible to be rigid in your approach if you're SC. Philip Meyer;355874 Wrote: > If I were to rip a compilation album, SC works straight away in my case > - there is no album artist tag (because it's an album with various > artists, there's no one artist that makes up the album). and thats kool and the gang for you. Philip Meyer;355874 Wrote: > Setting Album Artist="Various Artists" is just wrong. This would be > stored in SC as an artist called Various Artists, and not be a > compilation album. however wrong you think it is, doesn't matter. its how mainstream apps do it, period, end of story. i agree with the second sentence. thats why setting comp=1 should over-ride the album artist data and alert SC to the fact that the file is part of a comp, and SC should then treat it as a comp. Philip Meyer;355874 Wrote: > I believe this causes two "Various Artists" artists to be displayed in > SC (with the default compilation settings), as compilation albums are > displayed as a special "Various Artists" artist. If I were to change > SC library settings to use a different name for compilation albums, > such as "Compilations", then I'd see normal compilation albums under > that, and a "Various Artists" album for the album that has album > artist="Various Artists". i believe all that is correct, (i just forget what the default comp settings are so i can't say for sure). i have filed bugs on all that too btw, (eg. under Home->Artists cds with Various Artists in TPE2 won't get listed at all, anywhere in Home->Artists, UNLESS you change the default SC comp name). but whatever problems it causes with SC, are problems SC needs to deal with, b/c the marketplace reality is not going to change. new customers will keep coming to SC as time goes on, with TPE2/album artist data for their comps. you can't wish it away. btw, i expect the new schema will be dealing with a lot of these issues, esp since i now have filed bugs for all of them. Philip Meyer;355874 Wrote: > This would also be incorrect for iTunes too, as the album would appear > under an artist called "Various Artists", and not within Compilations, > which is what all ITUNESCOMPILATION albums appear under. i'm not an itunes expert, but i know it does use TPE2, i just don't know if it uses it ALL the time. i'd assume it does though, even for comps. so how it does what it does i can't say... maybe it just uses comp tags exclusively and ignores TPE2 regardless of the value. i hate itunes tho and would prefer not to experiment to find out. I wouldn't set Album Artist="Soundtrack", because it > wouldn't then be linked to Tangerine Dream. listen, i have no beef with how you do your stuff. i want you to do it any way you see fit. i just don't get why you don't seem to want me to be able to do that as well, especially since i am just trying to emulate/be compatible with the existing defacto standards. i mean, i'm not making "left field" requests, i am making requests / observations based on and as a reaction to the standards of the marketplace, however flawed they may be. thats why 8001 was requested to begin with. Philip Meyer;355874 Wrote: > "Soundtrack" could be set as a genre, or could appear in the album name, > or in a comment, etc. Everyone has their own way of indicating such > albums; there isn't a standard, nor a "defacto" standard. yes there is. TPE2 as album artist IS a defacto standard. i don't know what more evidence you need to concede that. if you won't, you are imo, deluding yourself. slim didn't implement 8001 just to appease me you know. they saw the logic and reality of it. join them. But setting Album Artist="Soundtrack" seems to be > the worst possible choice to make, as it conflicts with situations when > there is an artist that the soundtrack is performed by. true. but then nothings perfect. i basically handle it case by case. purple rain gets TPE2=Prince and The Doors (sndtrk) gets TPE2=The Doors (even tho unlike prince's its a real comp). but other stuff gets soundtrack, or original broadway soundtrack, etc... or various artists, or whatever i want. it works for me, and i'm hardly alone in this method. but its patterned after the marketplace method, as i've pointed out ad nauseum. but there's no reason why i shouldn't be able to do this, and no reason why i shouldn't be able to add comp=1 tags, and have SC use it. -- MrSinatra www.LION-Radio.org Using: Squeezebox2 (primary) / SBR (secondary) / SBC - w/SC 7.3b - Win XP Pro SP3 - 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - D-Link DIR-655 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53822 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping
