by whose definition? yours? SCs? the useless spec? what if i'm using flac, the spec wouldn't apply but i'd have the same situation. afaik, itunes sets TPE2 to be album artist and it sets a comp tag. seems itunes does not agree with your definition. winamp and gracenote both set TPE2 as well, winamp doesn't do comp tags, i don't know if gracenote does (or how itunes knows). but honestly, you really need to get beyond how you think things should be and realize there is a reality out there that may be wrong in some academic sense, but is reality. my reality is that i can NOT leave TPE2 blank just so SC can call it a comp. ok? i need to set TPE2 for winamp and other apps and uses. i have to use TPE2 for consistentcy. and btw, if you were only concerned with SC, then you should never need comp tags at all. either set TPE2 or not, but since there is a world outside of SC, thats why SC does respect comp tags, you can't always conform your tags to a SC only world. Philip Meyer;355795 Wrote: > Some people prefer to set album artist=Various Artists. some people? true, so do most mainstream apps automatically, and gracenote. I think > that's really naff - another frig. i agree its whacky, but its the reality. i think SC should be configurable so that a user can custom set strings to be recognized as meaning comps, but thats asking a lot, so in the meantime it should do TPE2 and comp tags together, which i thought it did, and i assume will, once the bugs are addressed. but what would i do in any other app to organize my compilation cds if i DIDN'T have TPE2 set? what about my non-comps that have guest artists or whatever? this is my question to you that you never seem to answer. one last SC point: if you set TPE2 and set comp=1, then SC should recognize it as a comp, and put it in the special comp area, whether it be the SC default or user specifed. the only way SC will see something as a comp is by not having TPE2 tags, (not possible for me), or by having a comp=1 tag, (assuming whatever bug is fixed). There isn't a standard Compilation tag - you have to enter a > custom tag Txxx COMPILATION. well, at the moment, i don't use non-standard tags... (i think anyway) but my whole argument about that wasn't so much about if i should use them or not, but rather that SC should work, optionally of course, with standard tags the way all other mainstream apps do. i think thats a reasonable expectation, moreso than SC asking users to tag using non-standard tags that a lot of mainstream apps don't support. TCMP is the itunes tag, and yes an abomination, but a defacto standard nonetheless. It's like trying to > store Compilation=0 and Compilation=1 together on a single album - it > doesn't work. and thats a fundamtental design flaw of SC. comp tags, specifically comp=1, should work with album artist data, ie. over-ride it, and i thought they did until this thread, (and i'm waiting for the bug to be addressed to see proof one way or the other). but there's no reason why SC shouldn't allow this to be the case. why not allow it to be exactly that way? you say album artist is used to prevent comps. yes, thats partially how SC uses it. but its also used to organize to browse by. and consider this, as i said above, when would you use comp=1 for SC if you didn't have TPE2/album artist data? what comp would have all matching TPE1/artist data? you never would! so why does SC support comp tags to begin with? I mean, what would the > point be of setting an album artist, if you don't want it > sorted/grouped by that artist, but to appear as a compilation album > (listed under Various Artists, or whatever you have SC defined to list > compilation albums as)? at this point, i haven't yet felt the need to do it. however, i do have CDs that are comps that i want listed (denoted) as soundtracks, or various artists, or what have you, but maybe i would want them all grouped / sorted together in SC. and maybe SC or plugins to it would make use of knowing that such and such was a compilation. right now, SC doesn't think i own a single comp. (and even prior to 8001 TPE2 was used for denoting) your original point was people could be confused if they didn't know that TPE2 can be/is read into the SC DB as album artist, and i said its a given and you said it isn't b/c it isn't mentioned in SC anywhere, and you're wrong it is. and btw, i am comfortable saying that if 8001 is enabled, SC sorts by TPE2. call it shorthand, but its correct enough. Nothing more. agreed, but thats IN SC, and hardly hidden. in fact its on the one page that i'd guess even newbies tweak to some degree. The means of getting an > album artist is the extra detail, in which it can be sourced from many > places. and i never said differently. but if i'm going to talk about mp3s and i'm going to talk about TPE2 and 8001 then i see it as no problem to say SC is sortin via my TPE2 tags, b/c in fact, in one sense, it is. understand what i mean, its the "big picture." a similar big picture is "if i gas the car, it'll go." now, the other sense is the one you are preoccupied with, that i also FULLY understood, that what is actually happening step by step is TPE2 is populating the ALBUMARTIST field, and then using that to do what it does. thats the small picture. ie. "if i get gas, the engine will ignite it, pistons will turn, transmission will, etc etc, and the car will go." no duh, understood, but not necessary to keep fully reiterating! -- MrSinatra www.LION-Radio.org Using: Squeezebox2 (primary) / SBR (secondary) / SBC - w/SC 7.3b - Win XP Pro SP3 - 3.2ghz / 2gig ram - D-Link DIR-655 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MrSinatra's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2336 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53822 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping
