I do this. I'm on Linux though, so slightly different tools. I have all
my lossy files (mp3, etc.) and folder art synced across to the portable
directory using rsync. Something like SyncToy on Windows would do the
same. All my flac files are transcoded to mp3 into the portable
directory. I use MediaMonkey to sync the portable directory with my iPod
Touch; iTunes would do the same.
