I saw this a while ago and thought it was so elegant that I just had to try it. I did get it to work (had to play around a bit with fstab, as I recall) but in the end abandoned it as it measn you are transcoding every time you want to try to read an "mp3" file, which is ok if you are just streaming but not if you want to sync a lot of mp3s to a portable player. And the additional disc space to keep an mp3 copy really is peanuts, so now I have flac2mp3 built into my ripping scripts and keep a full mp3 copy of the FLAC library.
