Huh? GIF files are far more lossy than jpgs. They have 256 possible colors, which would be as if all of the instruments in an orchestra were limited to a total of 256 notes, with none shared. Or if a violin plays a middle-C, a viola plays their middle-c, and trumpet plays a middle-c, that counts as three of the possible 256 sounds.
