Has there been any testing showing this actually happening, i.e. md5sums matching when there are errors? This is how I rip my CDs. I use cdparanoia, but with paranoia turned off. This allows full speed ripping. I rip every track twice and compare md5sums of the wav files. Only if the md5sums fail to match do I drop down into paranoia mode, and if that doesn't do it, I do a sector by sector match (like Rubyripper) until all sectors match at least twice (or I kick the CD out and try a different drive).
