Personally, I run knoppix (generally installed to a HDD and then upgraded
to debian/unstable)... it's pretty well setup... though not spartan like ubuntu apparently is. I mainly plug knoppix as it greatly simplified my
volunteer life helping newbies install various distros... Instead of responding to requests for debian installs with a deep sense of foreboding
and a heavy sigh at the thought of 'dselect' and other debian "installer"
goodies, I was just able to say 'stick this in yer coffee holder, run these commands, and let me know if anything looks funny' :-)

also, there's nothing wrong with learning more '*nix' stuff... it
won't likely be a waste of your time, particularly if you are at
all interested in developing software... and/or volunteering within
the FOSS community..

Thanks, guys, for the quick replies and information.

I'm not seeing any huge red flags on this distro, so I'm going to call it home. I also use Xandros 3, but XFM (modified KDE file manager) is not as stable as Gnome's file manager in ubuntu, not in practice anyway. It blows up sometimes and crashes the desktop, too. That's what I get for mixing it in with a Windows environment, I guess (some PCs on my LAN are still Windows). If I were Linux, I'd probably hack a fur-ball too <g>.

I appreciate the feedback. One of these times, I'm going to have to come to the meeting. I haven't seen some of you at all, and others not for a long time (2000-2001). I doubt you would even remember me.
