Oh, I agree with you 100%.  Moreover, the low latency and capabilities stuff 
scares the hell out of me, and I absolutely refuse to even try it.

The result of that, however, is that nobody wants to hear my cry about how 
abysmal my audio performance is.  I've found that people just pretty much 
take for granted that anyone with the slightest interest in doing audio work 
will run a patched kernel.
