True -- now -- but not exactly relevant to the original question.

I mentioned captioning, but you're right, I was forgetting the serious problem
with dubbed videos. Not especially an issue for me personally at the moment
but yeah, an important one all in all. Mmm.

Maybe you're just more relaxed than me. I find the whole user experience with
DVDs much less satisfactory -- too much waiting around and telling it to do
things that should be obvious. Videos have all sorts of time-evolved
usability improvements, like the fact that you can usually press the button
you want before the video has even loaded and it'll take effect when loading
has finished, and the fact that it'll play by default if the video is
record-protected. Add that to much better localised seeking, and it's just
slicker and simpler all round. I guess there probably are DVD players that
are that good to use; we don't have one.

Also, I hate seeking by scene -- it means you end up with a disproportionate
overexposure to the first two seconds of each scene, and end up encouraged to
think of a film as a set of little bites.

Much. So far we've never had a video tape destroyed completely -- though
there's still time. It's very easy to scratch a DVD so it won't play at all,
e.g. by putting it in while the drawer's closing and then trying to yank it
out again, or just leaving it around on the floor and letting the baby chew
it a bit. It's not at all uncommon to rent DVDs and find they won't play at
all either, and that's no fun when you have a demanding audience. Videos
sometimes have tracking problems, but you can always get _something_ out.

That little catch on the end of the tape works better than you might expect.
