I am not a musician and know nothing about how to use MIDI, so I am very much
a newbie in this field. Doing this for my teenage daughter who is pressing
on with grade 6 for piano and has to submit compositions for her last-year
GCSE Music option.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 four days ago and struggled to get sound from the
PC speakers when selecting example music from the File menu. The Rosegarden
documentation did not help, but Googling and visits to various Ubuntu forums
suggested I start JACK control,
then QSynth before running Rosegarden. I also fumbled around on the net for
a soundfont not knowing FluidR3_GM.sf2 (141.MB) was already present in
/usr/share/sounds/sf2/ for Ubuntu 10.10 (it was not on 10.04).
I gave this soundfont to Setup of QSynth. With that preparation I got sound
for Brandenburger, Halleluja Chorus, Mozart and Vivaldi, but for examples
that popup a dialog 'Channels Remapped', e.g. bogus_surf_riders, mandolin
sonatina and stormy riders there was no sound at all. How do I get sound for
these?

When the keyboard USB cable arrives from ebay, connecting the keyboard will
be another mountain to climb. Hope I will not run out of oxygen!

Ken
