That turns out to be an interesting question. What I had to do with "Bogus
Surf Jam," "Stormy Riders" and the "Mandolin Sonatina" was start by going into
the device manager dialog (Studio -> Manage MIDI Devices) to point the
playback device connection at something appropriate.

However, that wasn't the whole solution. I had to go over to my Roland Sound
Canvas and physically issue a "Reset GS" command to "warm boot" the thing
before any of these files would play. I don't see why at all, and I'm
mystified.

The channel remapping business shouldn't have caused that, but maybe it did.
It's very puzzling indeed.

All I can suggest is that the equivalent of warm booting my synth, translated
to your situation, is telling QSynth to restart the synth engine. Load one of
the offending files, restart QSynth's engine, and then use the MIDI device
manager to make sure the playback device is still connected to QSynth. Hit
play, and hopefully you'll experience joy.

In any case, I thought I audited all of our example files, and replaced all
the ones that had their channels out of whack. I apparently missed some!
I've saved the remapped versions of these three, and some others, and
hopefully when these go out with the next release of Rosegarden, this whole
problem will be less likely to crop up for new users experimenting with
Rosegarden out of the box.

I regret being unable to provide a really satisfying explanation of what's
going on here. This is causing trouble I hadn't imagined could even be
possible. I can see having to reboot my synth once after being left in a bad
state (eg. invalid program changes, controllers set to something out of
bounds, etc.), but when changing between files? Each and every time? That
just doesn't make any sense at all.
