My comments are interspersed.

> (1) Do you actually have a layout, or do you just model in S scale?

It depends. <vbg> I have a loop of track on a couple of O scale modules for
running equipment and am working on the design for the "real" layout. The real
layout will likely be domino or Free-Mo as I'm in a very small room and hope to
take over a larger location and incorporate the pieces into a new layout. The
loop of track (SHS' track) will be taken to local shows once we finish putting
scenery on it and add a couple of switches to it so it isn't so obviously
"round and round". The "real" layout will have handlaid track.

> (2) If you do run your scale models on a layout, [yours or anybody's] are they
exactly prototypically made to scale with all the detail, including underbodies?

I ignore what can't be seen (derailments are not allowed!). I'm trying to make
my models believable without worrying that a rivet may be 1/1000 off in 12" to
the foot.

> (3) Do you attempt to run scale models as true to scale as best you can?

Yes.

> (4) Are there models on your layout that are true to scale, but not finished.
Like the underbodies are not completely finished, and so on?

Yes.

> (5) Do you have any un-scale models running on your layout?

No, but with several kids living in the house, I can't say this will continue.
If unscale models do appear, they'll be gone when the prototype police arrive.
Also, with some family members loving steam, some Amtrak, and some liking
60s/70s equipment, I'm sure some consists will make purists cringe, even if all
the equipment is scale. Normally, I'll be running late 'teens/early '20s or
early PC.

> (6) Are you serious when you say that a SHS or AM model is off from the
prototype 1/10 of a foot, or that the slope is off a fraction, or that the
markings are wrong, or it has the wrong headlights for the model SHS-AM and
others are re-creating?

Is the difference noticeable? If so, I'm serious. The SHS 2-8-0 appears to be
very close to the Toledo & Ohio Central and Kanawha & Michigan NYC G-64 class
engines. I won't worry about the sand domes being 2" off but I may modify the
window corners eventually.

> (7) Are you having fun?

Yes, especially with my "tie a minute" five year old operator. My ten year old
son is the kit builder - I need to have more fun of this type with him.

> Anyway, this message may seem acrimonious. But after being in S scale since
1962, I've often wondered about the above questions. The only questions above
that I can say yes to, is yes, I have a scale layout, 4, 5, and 7.

Having been in S since 2003, I don't have your experience. It seems models are
more scale in S than they were/are in O - that might be a warped perception on
my part.
