Interestingly, a fellow here in the San Jose, CA area cuts up 3/4" 
cabinet grade plywood into lengths for use as benchwork.  Generally he 
cuts it to be 3" or 4" wide and 8' long.  And then he cuts it to the 
exact length as needed.  He claims (unverified by me) that this is 
cheaper and stronger than using good quality 1x3 or 1x4 lumber.  He 
swears by it and has a very sturdy layout.  Cheers...Ed L.
