Dear Ed,
Like it or not, for AM and ourselves, the AF comp. market is the
driving force. They are between 60% and 80% of our sales. Lionel
announced the SD40-2 with a big splash a few years back. This would be
the first new project that "L" tooled for the AF line. A few month
later, they dropped the project amid much criticism.
It takes us 3 years for all the steps of a project. I would suspect
the total cost for us on the SD-40-2 project would be about $200K to
$250K. It would cost much less for AM as they could use much of the
SD-60 drive. But, who would invest in such a project not knowing how
far "L" has progressed in research or tooling?
    My early AM thoughts,
Don
