One thing a modeller learns to do (in any gauge) is selective compression
(or whatever term is used).

My mainline will be 160' long but it represents a shortline of about 21
miles. You have to learn to leave some details out and to combine others.

My main yard will be 3-4 tracks wide and a curved 25' long. the prototype
is 10 tracks wide and a straight mile long.

And don't forget you'll probably run shorter and slower trains (and maybe a
scale clock).

It all works out in the end and the important thing is that you're happy
with it. It's either that or a new house (aka a basement with a roof).

regards

Ken
