Hi Tim, There's quite a few ways to build a layout. First one is to
just lay track in some pattern and run trains haphazardly. Others
might create a fantasy line to give some purpose to the fun. Next is
to compress a whole prototype railroad or segment of a railroad into
the space and just model a few interesting or necessary scenes.
Another is to build a scale or somewhat scale replication of a smaller
area like a yard or town or industrial switching district that will
fit in the space. Each approach has it's appeal, it just depends on
what you enjoy doing when you run those trains! So your 2.4 miles
could represent either the SHS/American models catalogs, the
Boondoggle and Busted in 1938, The SP crossing Donner summit in 1956,
or West Sacramento in 1995! What do you like? Any possibilities come
to mind??....dave
