I doubt if it has anything to do with available space, size of room,
or size of trains. I think the early poplarity of Lionel O gauge has
a lot to do with it. Lionel trains far outsold American Flyer in the
early days. Historically speaking, I think O gauge (scale?) was born
(in Europe) before S was hatched.

I do not see any logical reason why this should be so. I am probably
missing your point here. Following this logic, there should be more
N guys than HO guys. And, more Z guys than N guys. And TT should
not go extinct until after HO went extinct. But none of this is true.

Perhaps it is due to the lack of a complete and realistic RTR track
system that can be plunked down on the living room floor/rug and
operated. Complete with switches that have motors and controls built-
in. A wide variety of curve radii and turnouts that can handle full
scale length passenger cars, various angles of crossings, and so
forth. Y'know, all the basic stuff for the newcomer to get started.
SHS is getting closer every year to having all this, but still has a
ways to go yet. A large radius turnout would be a great addition to
the SHS line for full scale length long passenger and other modern
cars. Something the equivalent of HO Atlas Snap Track (or better) in
S scale would be a strong selling point. Not to mention dealer
distribution on a wider scale, more products, a respected S-scale-
specific magazine on nearly all hobby shop shelves, etc., etc. All
of these are things the other more popular scales have, but S lacks.
Gotta admit though, that with SHS being available via Walther's,
there is no reason why every hobby shop could not have just a little
bit of S for the upcoming holidays. Maybe a marketing
campaign? "S" "S"tands for "S"anta's "S"urprise....
dave....I've been wondering how did your conversation with Mike at
MTH go? The one where you were going to convince him to make some S
scale products? Maybe Mike could explain to us why he is shunning S
scale? I'd love to hear his comments. Curiosity is gnawing at me.
Cheers...Ed L.
