It's not a matter of shunning, it's the lack of a major manufacturer 
in S.  As good as AM, SHS, BTS, etc. are, they simply don't have 
anywhere the resources avaliable that the likes of Atlas, Athearn, 
Bachmann, Walthers, etc. has.  That translates into magazine ads, 
shelf space and customers at the hobby shop.  

Add to the mix that On30 came out of woods, virtually from nowhere 
thanks to Bachmann, and allows for O scale (although narrow gauge) in 
an HO space with the visual impression of S scale.  

We've all heard the "If I only didn't have so much invested in..." 
argument.  Ever consider that that very same argument might be 
keeping some folks in S?.  (S Scale hostages?  Hmmmm.) After all, 
it's easier to sell off HO to pay for O or vice-versa, than to find 
buyers for S to finance a change to HO or O.
