Dave, The only thing I can think of to improve on what you have done is to get
one of KD's Spring Picks. I have used tweezers, knife blades, and screw
drivers and find the spring pick works best. Something about the shape makes
them hold the spring better and the price isn't too bad. Maybe three bucks.

I like the block of wood idea. Never thought of that.

Hi Earl, I put some photos in the photo section in a new album
called Assembling KD 802 couplers. The trick is to undercut the slot
on the end of a piece of scrap wood to the correct width and taper so
you can slide the trip pin in and place the box under it as shown.
Holding the spring by the next to last coil with tweezers is more
secure than trying to use a screw driver or knife blade. If you don't
want to tack the lids on with a soldering iron you can carefully hold
the lid in place and screw the coupler to the car but if you ever
remove it and forget that it is not tacked it will come apart. Some
boxes hold with just the pressure of snapping on the lid and will stay
  together if you are carefull.
If you can't see the photos in the photo section let me know and
I'll email them direct to you....dave
