> Respectfully, I disagree with you. <snip> the HO gladhands (trip
pins) will function to the extent that the couplers uncouple, they do
not provide lateral movement sufficient for reliable operation of
Kadee's "delayed action" feature. I know that some guys use
electromagnets and beefed-up permanent magnets to overcome this
deficiency, but that's a lot of unnecessary work and/or $$.

Dick...

It is all in how you wanna look at it. If someone chooses to install
an electromagnet on the mainline in the first place, there is no
extra work or cost to use that electromagnet with HO couplers with
the shorter gladhands. Same cost as using an S coupler.

And, for those who choose to install an under-the-track permanent
magnet, it is no more work in install two of them piggybacked
together than to install just one. Yep, it does cost more (double),
but these magnets are made to be stackable which provides more
powerful magnetism and permits use with all scales from HO to G.
Neat concept actually.

The extra cost of piggybacked permanent magnets is more than made up
by using standard outta-da-box HO couplers with the HO gladhands
untouched. Purchased at online discount stores in bulk pacakaging,
these couplers are considerably less expensive than S couplers from
Kadee or others.

Plus, the smaller draft gear of the HO coupler makes it easier to
install a working coupler on the front end of steam locos which is
great for operational switching. And the variety of shank lengths,
over/under knuckle placement, different mounting methods, etc. of the
HO coupler make them very easily adaptable to all kinds of different
S models from the old soft white metal cast end sills to modern large
diesels to olde tyme logging equipment to whatever comes next.

I like 'em and don't see any particular disadvantage except that the
package says "HO" instead of "S". But I will admit the S couplers
are easier to work with mainly because they are larger. But the
Kadee #3 comes factory assembled and is not all that bad.

Cheers...Ed L.
