Most of my trains have brass cabooses, they most accurately cover 
the prototypes I model.  Brass cabooses are obviously heavier so the 
accordion action from the 802's at the end of the train is pretty 
severe.  Embarrassed to say I have never tried the double stiff 
spring idea, but that sounds good for cabooses only... I'll give it 
a test.

I actually like the slack action otherwise.  In fact I remember a 
cassette recorded circuit letter from a guy named Bob Nicholson 
piloting some AT&SF diesel out of Iowa years ago.  He was recording 
that circuit letter and chronicled starting his train.  Bob 
continued to speak for some period of time before the radio crackled 
in the background, "Caboose rolling, nickel"...   I guess that 
is "railroading" I like to "model"!  (BTW Bob, Wes Westendorf 
absolutely adored that tape.  He probably listened to it until the 
oxide wore off..., bless his soul...)
