There is a great recording of a steam powered train of hoppers starting on
the Buffalo Creeek and Gauley that was recorded from the caboose. It is on
one of the "Twilight of Steam" albums, probably number one. You hear the
enigine whistle off, then the racket of slack coming out raors down the
train and you can almost feel the caboose jump instantly to 5 mph. You
know that the guys in the caboose knew to hang on to something solid!
Have fun!

I actually like the slack action otherwise. In fact I remember a
cassette recorded circuit letter from a guy named Bob Nicholson
piloting some AT&SF diesel out of Iowa years ago. He was recording
that circuit letter and chronicled starting his train. Bob
continued to speak for some period of time before the radio crackled
in the background, "Caboose rolling, nickel"... I guess that
is "railroading" I like to "model"! (BTW Bob, Wes Westendorf
absolutely adored that tape. He probably listened to it until the
oxide wore off..., bless his soul...)
