The PBL hybrid K-27's are $595. DCC sound extra. They will not be
available weathered like their Foreground models. Like their brass, they
will be models of specific locomotives in a specific time frame. MMI was
supposed to do a die-cast K-27 in Sn3, for a few $$ less but they put theirs
on hold. For free-lancers, you can have any of PBL's locomotives painted
but not lettered. Their upcoming Shays (both S and Sn3), you can have
custom lettered for you own railroad, for a fee of course. They did that on
their last group of Shays, also. They have said they will not bring in
unpainted brass anymore unless you order it up-front with a deposit. In the
past, they would order a certain percentage unpainted, so the market is
evolving.

The latest on the RTR boxcars is that they will be available the first part
of the month. They are running a subscription type system with one or two
(your choice) boxcars about every 6 weeks (per Keren Booth). Sort of a
boxcar of the month club. Depending how this works out, other cars will
follow. They did recently upgrade their 3000 series boxcar kit, so you can
still build them yourself.

When I was younger, I thought why buy something I can build. Now I'm happy
not to have to build everything. Building 10 boxcars can be fun, building
60 or more can be a chore. (I can probably use 100.)

Actually I was told at a narrow gauge convention that the NASG's name was
wrong and should be the NASS, National Association of S-Scalers. Since
scale actually means the ratio of the model (drawing, etc.) S scale would
include:
S (including hirail/tinplate), Sn42, Sn3, Sn30, Sn2, etc.

S gauge can include On42, Gn20, and Fn18. You want think that's weird, but
I've seen models using HO gauge in HO, Sn42, On30, 3/8n20, and Gn15.

I think the main reason we don't see more narrow gauge types is the
hi-rail/tinplate view of S. It's a shame because other than locomotives and
rolling stock, everything else is the same. Please note that I'm not
anti-hi-rail/tinplate at all. It's just that many others don't know of the
more "scale" side of S standard gauge. (I still have my childhood AF
trains; they just won't run on my layout.)
