This misses the point, all real passenger cars are whatever their prototype length is period!
Those with the idea of an association of S scale need only review a few recent posts to understand the challenge. Passenger cars over 10% too short are somehow just fine for S scale. Close enough is good enough. I wonder if SHS or DPH or Jim King made a 40' PS-1 box car that was only 36' long what the reaction would be ? Model railroaders outside S scale look at that and it only re-affirms their `joined at the hip' with AF perception. Sooner or later we just have to accept that as reality and get on with life! Understand clearly that I am not bashing the AM Budd cars. They were built for the hirail community and to negotiate AF curves; they do that very well mission accomplished. Only saying that personally, when I look to buy or build an NYC (or PRR or AT&SF or CRI&P ) passenger car that was 80+ feet long, well..., I expect it to be 80+ feet long. Jim K. P.S. Someone mentioned Santa Fe Budd coaches at 72'. I searched my AT&SF Budd library and can't find any AT&SF pre-war or post war Budd coaches that were less than 79 feet in coupled length. Only cars that were less were RPO's and baggage.
