N, HO, O and G scales all suffer from SPCS (Short Passenger Car
Syndrome) to some degree. It hasn't seemed to harm them in any way.
Granted, they all have alternatives to SPCS, but then they also have
a larger customer base to demand scale length cars of specific
prototypes.
Kaslo announced their full length cars in 2003 for four distinct
prototype-specific trains. I believe only the NYC cars survived the
cut and those folks are still waiting. And yes, I'm aware of some of
the problems Kaslo has encountered in bringing these cars to market.
The simple fact of the matter is, the AM Budd's have been out there
since 2000. When AM challenged the "scalers" for 100 orders for full
scale length(CZ) cars, we came up "short."
Would AM have drawn more interest for full lenght cars using PRR,
NYC, UP, SP, SF or other prototypes? Who knows... My guess is no.
Sure, I would also like full lenght Budd and Pullman Standard cars,
but I don't see it happening anytime soon. So, the AM Budds are
adequate stand-ins.
